| Abstract:The teak defoliator, Hyblaea puera, native to southern and southeastern Asia, is a polyphagous pest capable of infesting dozens of host plant species. Owing to its broad host range, strong dispersal capacity and high reproductive potential, it is now widely distributed across more than 30 countries on five continents. In recent years, H. puera has caused severe outbreaks in mangrove ecosystems in Guangxi and Hainan, China, posing a significant threat to the ecological security of mangrove wetlands. To support effective management of this pest in China, this paper reviews the taxonomic history, morphology, geographic distribution, host plant range, life history, biological and ecological characteristics, natural enemies and control measures of H. puera. Current research gaps include underdeveloped population monitoring technologies, unclear outbreak mechanisms, insufficient exploration and utilization of biocontrol resources, and limited intelligence level and efficiency of integrated control system. Finally, future prospects for the standardized, information-based and environmentally friendly development of monitoring and management strategies are discussed, with the aim of facilitating the formulation of more effective, integrated and sustainable control measures. |
